5. Why did the British want to settle Melbourne in the first place? The British wanted to settle in Melbourne because there were too many people in Britain and there was not enough room for the convict so they wanted new land where the convicts could work and be punished. Another reason was that there was plenty of fresh water and food supplies. 6. How was land in Melbourne obtained by its founders? Explain. The land of Melbourne was obtained by its founders by Batman supposedy bought the land from the local aboriginals by offering handkerchiefs, shirts etcetera but the aboriginal didn’t realise that they were selling their land. Batman also claimed the territory based on the European idea of land ownership and legal contract but it was not the same policy that the aboriginals used so they were unaware what the British men were doing. The aboriginal people policy is that land cannot be bought or sold. 7. Was Batman’s Treaty successful? Explain. -I would say Batman’s Treaty was successful for the British people but it was unfair for the aborigines. It was unfair because Batman claimed that he had negotiated with the Aboriginal chiefs but he actually negotiated with the tribal elders who weren’t in a position to sell their land. In signing the treaty with the local Aboriginal people, the British people gave the eight “chiefs” whose agreed on the 2,000km² land around Melbourne and another 400km² around Geelong in exchange ofblankets, knives, tomahawks, scissors, looking-glasses, flour, handkerchiefs and shirts. 8. After Batman and Fawkner came, how did Melburnians get their land? After Batman and Fawkner came, Melburnians got the land because as soon as Batman’s treaty was declared the Proclamation of Governor Bourke of New South Wales was invalid and the British Crown was then Declared on 6 August 1835 which owned the entire land of Australia and that the British Crown was the only ones who could sell or distribute land. 9. Was the founding of Melbourne’s fair? Give your reasons: I thought the founding of Melbourne was unfair as the Aborigines respected others and that they thought the British would only stay for a while and then leave and they thought the gifts where just for thanks giving but actually it was to exchange for the land of Australia. I also think it is unfair because the Aborigines were not aware of the British Laws and policy so thats why they were humble enough to agree to the treaty. http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/ergo/batmans_treaty http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundation_of_Melbourne
After the Activity:Potato Detective …
Reflecting on the activity:
1.How did you feel when you learned you couldn’t use the potato’s number in your description?
I did not find it too hard to describe the potato without the number because we were able to find a way to describe the potato and find different dents and cuts in the potato that would look different to other potatoes.
2. Did you find it easier or harder to write in a group and why?
I didn’t find it harder to write in a group because my team members thought of ideas better then I would have done by myself.
3. Describe the different methods used in your group to describe the potato, and explain which were the most effective and why. We looked at the different dents it made the potato look like as if it had a smile on its face. We also measured the distance between each cut or dent.
4. What ‘roles’ did you observe being undertaken in your group?
A note taker and the rest were observers.
5. Describe the multiple intelligences used by yourself and others in your group during this activity. How well did your group make use of these different intelligences to achieve its goal? – give examples
6. Describe how your group worked together as a team. What qualities would a group to make a ‘good team’ for this activity?
We had a scribe which wrote down the observation and the rest of the group just found clues which would make identifying the potato easier. In a group I believe there should always be a team leader, and note taker and time keeper.
7. What difficulties arose during the each part of the activity (describing and ‘choosing the correct potato’)? Why did these problems arise?
The difficulties arose during the activity was finding the other peoples potato because some of the instructions the team gave was unclear and there were so many potatoes choose out of.
8. In retrospect, what else could your group have done to improve its performance in describing and selecting a potato?
I don’t think we needed to do anymore to describe the potato any better as when we were reading out the clues the team that was finding our potato found it easy to identify which one was ours.
9. In what other way(s) could you have behaved within the group to assist with the task? Explain, as clearly as you can, why you chose not to behave in this way during the activity?
I think our grouped well and we didn’t have any difficulties.
week 1 homework
What are your learning styles? What have you learnt about yourself from the Hermann Brain activities this week?
I think I learn better visually and hands on experiences because when people show me demonstrations and how things work I can understand and learn it quicker. The Hermann Brain activity showed me what kind of person I am. After I completed that activity I then knew I was more of a type of person that judges things in a way where I consider what people think and then make my decisions. I am a person that loves telling stories and like group discussions and enjoy working with other people.
Did you disagree with any of the findings/observations? Explain
No I do not disagree on any of the findings and observation as I do like working in groups and I like to consider what people think and feel towards a situation.
Were you surprised by anything you discovered about yourself this week? Consider for example, what you learnt about your learning style, working in teams or observing others in the group …
I realised that working in a group is very helpful and work can be done quicker. When you don’t know how to do something your team mate can always help you. Jobs can be done quicker because the job can be split and each person can concentrate on one part of the topic. I also realised that I am not such a bad organiser and public speaker. I can present to a class without getting nervous.
Do you think you rely too heavily on one style of learning? What new skills would you like to develop?
The skill I want to improve on is the way I direct and plan my journey. I need to improve on how to get to places
quicker.
What questions has this raised about:
A. You as a person?
I am a too controlling person.
